Unni Mukundan’s Marco surpasses Rs 100 crore globally, marking his first century.
The Malayalam film Marco, starring Unni Mukundan, has cemented its place as one of the biggest hits of 2024. Directed by Haneef Adeni, this gory action thriller has made waves globally, surpassing the Rs 100 crore mark at the worldwide box office in just 23 days. This milestone marks the first time Unni Mukundan has achieved a century in his career, and the film continues to draw audiences even in its final weeks of theatrical run.
Marco has performed exceptionally well across markets. In its home state of Kerala, the film grossed an impressive Rs 45 crore. The Hindi belt also contributed significantly, with the movie collecting around Rs 12 crore. What’s remarkable is that Marco started with just Rs 1 lakh on its opening day in North India but picked up momentum due to positive word of mouth and strong action sequences.
Released during the pre-Christmas weekend, the film is currently the seventh highest-grossing Malayalam movie of 2024 globally. Industry experts predict that if it continues its run for another couple of weeks, the movie might touch Rs 110 crore at the worldwide box office.
Despite stiff competition from Mohanlal’s Barroz and Tovino Thomas’s Identity, Marco emerged as the top choice for audiences in Kerala. However, its fourth-weekend collections slowed slightly with the arrival of Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram.
Amid its theatrical success, reports suggest that Marco will soon make its digital debut. According to sources, Netflix has acquired the film’s streaming rights and plans to release it in Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. The OTT premiere is expected 45 days after its theatrical release, placing it in late January or early February 2025. Interestingly, the streaming version is rumored to include extended scenes and additional content not featured in theaters.
Marco serves as a spin-off of the 2019 film Mikhael, focusing on the titular villain Marco. The revenge drama follows Marco, played by Unni Mukundan, as he returns from Italy to avenge the murder of his adopted and visually impaired brother, Victor. Before his death, Victor identified Russell Isaac as his killer, setting the stage for Marco’s violent quest for justice.
The film boasts an ensemble cast including Kabir Duhan Singh, Durva Thaker, Anson Paul, Arjun Nandakumar, Yukti Tareja, Abhimanyu Shammy Thilakan, Siddique, Jagadish, and Riyaz Khan.
Following the massive success of Marco, Unni Mukundan is set to star in the upcoming comedy-drama Get-Set Baby. Directed by Vinay Govind, the film features a stellar cast, including Nikhila Vimal, Chemban Vinod, Surabhi Lakshmi, and more. The movie is scheduled for a 2025 release and promises to showcase Mukundan in a lighter, comedic role, a refreshing change from his intense performance in Marco.
