Popular K-pop group TXT’s star member Yeonjun has a reputation for going viral on social media, owing to his dancing, vocals, rapping, and a lot of hilarious moments from variety shows. A fan-favourite idol, Yeonjun, is once again making headlines but for all the wrong reasons. The fourth-generation K-pop idol recently became the target of artificial intelligence, especially at a time when deepfake technology has significantly impacted celebrity lives.
Becoming the latest victim of artificial intelligence, an AI-created intimate video of Yeonjun has caused a stir on the internet, leaving fans furious. The video in question shows Yeonjun kissing an unknown woman, suggestively a fan. It was not long before fans found that it had been created with AI. The video quickly went viral gaining immense criticism from social media users.
A fan wrote, “Yeah, this should be punishable by law like y’all have actually lost your minds. Just the thought of the content you guys can make once AI has reached its full potential is downright horrifying.. this is literally harassment,” while another commented, “The whole concept of having AI imitate a human being for whatever reason is just disgusting.”
“I feel like people should be able to protect their image from being used to make content like this. They’re not getting paid for the free ad for the AI, and it’s damaging to their reputation & livelihood. Let’s get the ball rolling on the massive lawsuits and get some legislation going,” a third comment read.
A furious fan expressed frustration over deepfakes and added, “Just because they are celebrities doesn’t give you the right to make fake AI videos of them doing who knows what and to think half of the people being excited about this in the comments. Probably say, they are against deepfakes…get a grip.”
While this is not the first time that a celebrity has been a target of deepfakes, the repeated instances show how AI is becoming more used worldwide, with deepfake videos flooding social media lately. Earlier this month, Starship Entertainment, the agency behind IVE, landed in hot water over sharing a deepfake video of members Jang Wongyoung and An Yujin on Weibo. The post sparked a widespread backlash from fans and the public, prompting the company to apologise. Over the years, several K-pop idols have been subjected to such malicious deepfakes including BLACKPINK, TWICE, (G)I – DLE and Babymonster.
