In 2023, fans were thrilled to hear that Andrew Garfield had been cast in Guillermo del Toro’s dream project Frankenstein. In the Netflix movie, Andrew was set to play the iconic role of Victor Frankenstein, which had left fans excited. But earlier this year, it was revealed that due to scheduling conflicts, Andrew had to step away and Jacob Elordi was announced as his replacement. Recently, Andrew shared his thoughts on the change and admitted that while he feels happy for Jacob, he’s also “disappointed” to lose such a major role. The actor also had a meaningful conversation with Jacob about the role at the Marrakech International Film Festival.
Speaking with Deadline, Andrew said, “I was just with Jacob Elordi in Marrakesh, who ended up playing the character of the creature. So I was hearing about how amazing and hard work and satisfying that was for him, so I’m very glad that it was him doing it. I’m of course disappointed that I didn’t get to do it but because I love Guillermo and I love Oscar and everyone he assembled, so I was disappointed. Meeting Jacob felt serendipitous, so I could really see and hear that he maybe needed that experience more than me. So that was cool to feel that he had a really kind of spectacular time on that job.”
Although Andrew Garfield lost the opportunity to be part of a big project like Frankenstein, he explained that he’s still looking for roles that truly inspire him. He’s focused on finding a project that excites him and allows him to fully commit.
In November, Vanity Fair had dropped the first look of the Frankenstein movie, offering a chilling look at Doctor Frankenstein in his eerie laboratory. According to the portal, a lot of the film, including the laboratory scene, was shot in the once vibrant and lively buildings. Speaking about the subject, Guillermo del Toro said, “Gothic romance was born partially out of the fascination with ruins. Sometimes they’re more beautiful than the complete building because it’s the clash of creation and destruction.”
Other than Jacob Elordi, Frankenstein also stars Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz and Felix Kammerer.
