It has been nearly a decade since the wisecracking mercenary was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Wade Wilson aka Deadpool in the original 2016 film. With two sequels and box office businesses racking in millions over the years, the films are counted among the most successful and moneymaking franchises in Hollywood. But, things were not merry for Tim Miller, who directed the first Deadpool film back in 2016.

Miller recently opened up about how Deadpool wasn’t a profitable project for him, especially as a first-time director making a superhero film.

Speaking at the panel at CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, Tim Miller, who was discussing his latest series Secret Level, opened the about his feature film directorial debut with 2016’s Deadpool. Despite the film being a massive hit with a great impact on audiences, he recalled receiving a very low salary.

“You guys might not know, but it’s not really a profitable thing to be a first-time director in Hollywood, and I’ll tell you exactly. I got $225,000 to direct Deadpool. I know it sounds like a lot of money, but for two years of work, that’s not a ton of money,” he told Collider

Miller further explained that he was extremely grateful for how the film worked out for him as a first-time director, adding that he feels “uniquely fortunate” to have been a part of such a huge franchise. “Then my second thought is, I wish my direct deals had a piece of the merchandising so that I could get some money from all of that,” he added.

Released in 2016, the first Deadpool film collected around $782 million at the global box office, following which the sequel came out in 2018 with David Leitch taking over the director’s chair. The third and suggestively the last instalment in the franchise came out in 2024 with Deadpool & Wolverine. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film saw Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool joining forces with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine.
